Do’s and Don’ts of Long Term Self Storage

Putting your belongings into long term self storage can be needed for a variety of reasons, from travelling around the world for a prolonged period or renting out a property.  K2S Storage offer state of the art storage facilities that will protect your possessions no matter how long you store them for. However, to keep them in mint condition for the duration of their storage, here are a few do’s and don’ts for long term storage.

Do’s

  • Make sure any delicate items are protected properly before they are put into storage. Wrap any fragile items, such as antiques, in bubble wrap, newspaper and dust sheets to prevent any damage.
  • Use new boxes to store your items.  This will store your items in a more stable manner and there is much less danger of the boxes breaking or falling apart.
  • Make sure your boxes are sealed properly with packing tape, as this won’t come unstuck and will prevent the accumulation of dust on the stored objects.
  • Make sure any clothes are clean and dry before you store them away, as bacteria will grow on unwashed clothes, causing them to stain and smell.
  • Sell larger, unwanted items. Storing things that you don’t really need will just take up space and will make organising your stuff more difficult.
  • Store heavier items at the bottom and lighter items at the top.
  • Fill your boxes used for storage to the top. This will prevent them from being crushed if other boxes are placed on top.

Don’ts

  • Store unwrapped breakable objects next to each other as this could cause damage.
  • Store assembled furniture if it can be broken down into smaller parts, such as flat pack furniture. Storing the finished piece will take a lot more space and have more chance of getting damaged.
  • Stand sofas on their ends. They aren’t designed to take pressure on these points and this will weaken the structural integrity.
  • Store anything that is dirty or wet. This can lead to serious rust, corrosion and mould.
  • Never forget to label your boxes. Coming back after a long period and trying to sort everything out will be really tricky if everything isn’t clearly and carefully labelled.
  • Store anything that is flammable, hazardous, perishable or illegal.
  • Pile your boxes too high to reach. This can be dangerous and can make unpacking your self storage unit trickier. Make sure all of your items are within easy reach and aren’t blocked by others.
  • Forget to keep all relevant screws and fixtures together in separate bags that are clearly marked. This will make rebuilding furniture a lot easier.
